Footnotes:

1) 孟宗竹 is under a genus of bamboo known as Phyllostachys.

2) This means brute force can never be greater than the strength of the mind, which uses the huge bell in all buddhist temples as a metaphor to symbolise mental concentration.

3) This is with reference to the monastery mentioned before this line about Buddhism, 禅定 Samadhi and also at the same time has the meaning of stabilising.

4) When taking oaths, swearing upon the heavens and blood covenants are the 2 common rituals that the Chinese do.

5) It means though history was ages ago but the scars of war are still clearly in everyone's mind.

6) Literally, it is called wooden fish, it is a percussion instrument made of a hollow wooden block, originally used by Buddhist monks to beat rhythm when chanting scriptures.

7) Literally, it means "you go, you go again", but it means continuously challenging in this context of warring.

8) It is known as the Chinese transverse flute.
